PETER MICHELMORE, an old friend--and to give him his deserved independence, old in his own right--touched me recently by remembering the reason why, countless years ago, I went on a driving holiday through the coal country of Pennsylvania. It wasn't a passion for anthracite nor a special interest in William Penn's leafy (sylvan, from the Latin sylvestris, of the woods) colony that set me on the road. I wanted to explore the Region, setting of five novels and fifty-six short stories by the temporarily forgotten American writer John O'Hara. I have a memento of my journey, a photograph of myself standing at the entrance of O'Hara's family home on Mahantongo Street ...
