Archie Glenn Williford and his second wife, Patsy, separated in late 2002 after 18 years together. According to a family source, Mr. Williford had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, which entails wide and sometimes violent mood swings. In November, according to the same source, he had voluntarily admitted himself into a local hospital's psychiatric unit. Later, the hospital tried to locate him for involuntarily commitment, but was unable to find him.
On December 10, 2002, Mr. Williford went to the residence of stepson-in-law Danyal Eugene Ward in Coats, North Carolina, to see his wife and his stepdaughter, whom Mrs. Williford was visiting. According to Harnett County Sheriff's Office reports, Mr. Williford became physical with both women and verbally threatened Ward and others in the Ward family. Ward reportedly retrieved a shotgun from his bedroom and repeatedly implored Williford to leave. When Williford refused, and continued to be verbally abusive, Ward fired a single shot.
