Dave Staley is co-owner of Brock's Gunsmithing Inc. in Spokane, Washington. At 3:57 a.m. on April 9th, the security company monitoring the shop called to inform Staley that a burglar alarm indicated a break-in was occurring.
When Staley arrived, he found a youth, later identified as 18-year-old Christopher Love, serving as a lookout behind the building. Two juvenile accomplices, having removed a ventilation cover to gain entry to the building, were tossing guns through a window.
Love was armed with a .38-caliber pistol. Staley and Love exchanged words, and when Love raised his gun, Staley fired his own .40-caliber handgun. The bullet struck Love in the left shoulder, knocking him to the ground. Staley called police and held Love at gunpoint until they arrived. Love was treated at a local hospital for the wound, which was not life-threatening. Staley was unharmed.
After hearing the shot, the two juveniles, ages 14 and 15, broke through a side window and ran away. They ran to an apartment rented by Love's girlfriend. ...
