Many supporters of the UN considered the war on Iraq to be a potentially lethal blow to the world body's prestige. Former Assistant Secretary-General Robert Muller does not share that assessment.
During a March visit to San Francisco, Muller surprised "many in the audience ... with his most positive assessment of where the world stands now regarding war and peace," reported Lynne Twist, a representative of the State of the World Forum (a project of the Gorbachev Foundation). "I'm so moved by what is going on in our world today' Muller told the stunned audience. "Never before in the history of the world has there been a global, visible, public, viable, open dialogue and conversation about the very legitimacy of war."
