In recent years, the UN has reviewed several controversial death penalty cases in the United States. In late March, UN scrutiny of our legal system took a new turn as the United Nations Human Rights Commission (presently chaired by Libya) opened an inquiry into the case of Lionel Tate, a 16-year-old serving a life sentence without parole for beating to death a six-year-old girl named Tiffany Eunick.
Lionel's mother was babysitting Tiffany in the family's Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, home at the time of the murder. Although Lionel was only 12, he was nearly 6 feet tall and weighed 166 pounds.
