The sequel to "X-Men"is entitled "X2,"which cunningly suggests that we may be getting double the pleasure for our money. The first film, which came out in 2000, concerned a team of "mutants”--creatures who, more often than not, resemble human beings, but each of whom possesses an unusual or protuberant talent. Why Warren Beatty was not asked to join the club, I cannot fathom, although some moviegoers would advance an even stronger claim for his sister, the spirited Shirley MacLaine. Her psychic powers would slot in nicely beside those of Jean (Famke Janssen), who telepathically diverts air-to-air missiles; Mystique (Rebecca Romijn-Stamos), who sounds like a cut-price perfume and changes shape as the mood takes her; and Rogue (Anna Paquin), who can suck out all your energy with the merest touch of her hand. We had a word for that at school.
All these dainty women return for the latest installment, as does Halle Berry, who reprises the role of Storm, the climate-warper, with the faintly distracted air of one who has an Oscar on her mantelpiece and better things to do. Also present are Professor Xavier (Patrick Stewart), the good genius who is confined to a wheelchair, and Magneto (Ian McKellen), the naughty genius who was confined to a "plastic prison"at the end of the first film.
