Turkish Cypriot officials see the divided island's fading Green Line as a golden opportunity to boost education, tourism and food production and begin catching up with wealthier Greek Cypriots to the south.

High-profile northern businesses include coastal casinos, but Turkish Cypriot officials like Economy Ministry Under Secretary Ahmet Aker make no secret of their desire to see more productive sectors elbow in on the action.

As far as his ministry is concerned, Aker told AFP: "The gambling sector is not an important sector of the economy, it's not even a desirable sector of the economy.
