Unwanted but not undeterred, Rickey Henderson is back. Sort of. Unable to find a job in the majors, there was Henderson starting in left field when the Newark Bears, an independent minor league team, opened their season last week. Henderson had six hits in his first three games, including three in one game in support of starting pitcher Jose Lima.
Henderson might be playing off Broadway, but he still carries himself like a star. His body still is so sculpted it appears he has to be poured into his uniform, and he still likes putting on a show. On opening night, he mingled with fans during a pitching change.
And the question, Henderson says, is not "Why?"; it's "Why not?"
