If the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, Dr. Frances Lucas-Tauchar, the first female president of Millsaps College MS, began taking those steps as a youngster. Her father was Dr. Aubrey K. Lucas, president of the University of Southern Mississippi from 1975 to 1996. Growing up in the president's house helped her understand the job responsibilities by osmosis.
She spoke about her road to the presidency at the conference for state network coordinators sponsored by the American Council on Education's Office of Women held in Washington DC in February.
