If the Bush administration tries to tinker with Title IX, the 1972 federal law that guarantees females equal access to athletics programs in education, Congress will intervene with new legislation, according to Rep. Louise M. Slaughter, Democratic chair of the Congressional Women's Caucus.
She and 13 other Democrats are sponsoring a resolution saying that "Congress and women around the country will not tolerate attempts to weaken Title IX."
Warning that U.S Education Secretary Rod Paige still has the authority to change how his agency implements the law, she said women are still underrepresented in school sports. Boys get 1.1 million more chances to play in high school and 36% more college scholarship aid than girls.
