The family of Saddam Hussein looted 900 million dollars from Iraq's central bank before his downfall, a US Treasury Department official said.

The New York Times said Saddam sent his son Qusay to the vaults of the central bank in the hours before the first US bombs fell on Baghdad to load nearly one billion dollars onto three tractor trailers.

"All I can do right now is confirm this report of 900 million dollars taken from the Iraqi central bank by the Saddam Hussein regime or family," the Treasury official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.
