DID YOU READ B.J. Coman's article in last month's Quadrant? It was entitled "Environmental Primitivism and the Noble Savage", and is a surgically precise cut at the yucky sentimentality which drives many of today's urban-dwelling environmentalists. Mr Coman's target in that article is "the syrupy rhetoric and wholly false adulation for the `ancient wisdom'" by which (in the imaginations of our Greens) tribal societies are regulated.
It is about 350 years since Jean-Jacques Rousseau invented the "Noble Savage", and in all those years not one walking and talking example of him has been produced for our inspection or conversation. Yet many Greens will assure you ...
