A Basket of Nectarines.(Poem)

 
A BASKET OF NECTARINES 
 
   When my father went a-courting 
   he brought my mother fruit, 
   fresh nectarines in a basket, 
   and wore his Sunday suit. 
 
   Picked them in the garden 
   and walked across the hill 
   quickly to determine 
   if she could love him still. 
 
   I think that ardent summer 
   began the fabled time 
   when all fruit was much finer 
   but nectarines were sublime. 
 
   Mulberries then had flavour 
   and peaches knew no ...
