WHEN EUROPEANS began making their way from the northern hemisphere to the strange and unique lands of the antipodes, a process of cultural transformation, whose long-term effects were totally unforeseeable, was set in motion. Such forces affected not only the Aboriginal population, but also dramatically altered the consciousness of those settlers whose attitudes were formed in the social and environmental conditions of Europe.
