THE FISH CLOCK
Under the clay bank
the unegged fingerlings sleep like paper slippers,
coloured in passing by light, spent grass--
the sand spit of eels.
Yet to see--
to put their flat eyes to purpose
they dream without pictures the one dream common to fish.
Foxed by clouds darkening the water
they register increments of light
each finned spit of silver an unseeing gauge-a
camera,
a thermometer,
their inky juices pushed like mercury through flat veins.
They speak in ribbons of dissolved gas-needing
