Researchers from the US and Brazil recruited 21 people with end-stage heart failure and injected the patients' own stem cells into their hearts. Stem cells have the capacity to become specific types of cells, such as heart muscle.
Of the 21 patients, 14 were given an average of 15 injections containing about 2 million stem cells each. The stem cells were injected into areas of the heart with muscle damage. The remaining seven patients were used as a control group.
