A team of researchers from across the US found that intellectual impairment occurred with lead concentration levels in the blood below 10 micrograms per decilitre (mcg/dl) - the level currently considered acceptable by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The researchers say their study signifies a change from previous research, which tended to focus on children with higher exposures to lead than in their sample and which had displayed a lack of awareness that "substantial impairment may occur at lower levels".
