The English, Scots and Welsh cast ballots in local and regional elections seen as a mid-term test of the popularity of British Prime Minister Tony Blair and his ruling Labour party following the Iraq war.
More than 30 million people were eligible to cast ballots for 11,596 representatives in 340 local councils across England and Scotland before polls closed at 10:00 pm (2100 GMT).
Voters in Scotland and Wales also elected members to their regional parliaments, founded in 1999 under a policy of devolution, two years after Labour swept to power in a landslide general election victory.
Rain across much of Britain Thursday prompted concern of a poor voter turnout.
First results from England showed Labour holding on to seven councils but losing control of two others to the Conservatives, Britain's main opposition party.
First results from Scotland and Wales were expected around midnight.
