Although the SARS outbreak remains relatively mild in the United States, the ailment offers a terrifying specter of the kind of rapidly-spreading, highly-contagious diseases that could menace global populations in the future, a top US health official warned.
"Although some diseases have been conquered by modern advances such as antibiotics and vaccines, new ones are constantly emerging," said Julie Gerberding, director of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) at a senate health hearing.
"SARS is the most recent reminder that we must always be prepared for the unexpected," Gerberding said.
