Player X has started slowly; will he rebound? We don't know about X (and don't ask Y), but we do know something about several players off to slow starts this season.
Adrian Beltre, 3B, Dodgers. From 2000-02, Beltre batted .243-22-91 before the All-Star break, .296-32-129 after. He is struggling mightily now, but he will rebound strongly if the Dodgers remain patient.
Steve Finley, OF, Diamondbacks. Finley is a strong finisher, but he's 38, and he will slow down some time, right? He must bat .296 and slug .517 from here on out to match his strong 2002. A more likely outcome: He'll continue to struggle.
Roy Halladay, SP, Blue Jays. Don't worry: From 2000-02, Halladay posted a 7.17 ERA in April. In his last 27 innings entering the week, he had a 27:5 strikeout to walk ratio and a 4:1 ground ball to fly ball ratio. Both stats indicate a surge is around the corner.
Torii Hunter, OF, Twins. Hunter's plate discipline is much better than in the past--he's on pace for 70 walks--and his average spiked recently. He could turn things around and head toward a career year.
Greg Maddux, SP, Braves. He's on pace to allow 263 hits and 47 homers in 225 innings. He had a similar start last season and ended up doing very well. Maddux's skills are declining, but he is too good to keep stinking.
Mike Piazza, C, Mets. On pace to bat .279-21-28, Piazza will improve his average and RBIs, but don't expect MVP-caliber numbers. Piazza has caught 1,331 games, and he is starting to pay the price. Look for .280-27-75.
