MELBOURNE, May 1 Asia Pulse - Biota Holdings Ltd (ASX:BTA) shares surged yesterday, after the biotech company said its United States subsidiary had made an important breakthrough in the development a new HIV/AIDS drug.
Biota said California-based Biota Inc had used its N-MAX technology to create novel versions of nucleoside drugs called "nucleotide mimics", which had the potential to be more active and less toxic.
Nucleoside drugs are used to treat HIV/AIDS, hepatitis C and cancer.
Biota said the latest achievement involved the discovery and initial testing of a nucleotide mimic of AZT (zidovudine), a leading anti-HIV nucleoside drug.
Biota Inc president and chief scientist Dr Dan Cook presented the research findings at the International Conference on Antiviral Research (ICAR) in Savannah, Georgia, on Monday.
