GENEVA, May 1 Asia Pulse - A high-ranking World Health Organization (WHO) official said Tuesday that it is unfortunate that Taiwan recently experienced the appearance of a mass local transmission of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) at a hospital in Taipei.
Guenael Rodier, director of the WHO's Department of Communicable Diseases' Surveillance and Response, added that the island must now wait at least 30 days before the WHO considers removing it from its list of SARS affected areas with limited local transmission.
This was Rodier's first comment on the appearance of several SARS cases at Taipei Municipal Hoping Hospital.
The WHO had high expectations for Taiwan regarding the island's effective control of the SARS situation as it had not registered any new SARS cases for some 20 days prior to the appearance of new cases at Hoping Hospital.
