TAIPEI, May 1 Asia Pulse - A "Call Taiwan Taiwan" rally will be delayed until September due to the outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), organizers said Wednesday.
The announcement was made one day after the Alliance to Campaign for Rectifying the Name of Taiwan said that the rally would be held as scheduled May 11, despite the fear of the potentially deadly atypical pneumonia.
Huang Chao-tang, who is one of the officials in charge of organizing the rally, as well as a presidential adviser, said that after careful assessment over the past two days, it was decided that the rally will be postponed to curb the spread of SARS.
Huang said that there will still be a dramatically scaled down May 11 activity, but the main rally, which they hope will attract 100,000 people, will not be held until Sept. 6.
According to Huang, rectifying the name of Taiwan is the only road for Taiwan to pursue in its search for sustainable development. But he pointed out that a 100,000-people rally at a time when the nation is fighting SARS is hardly appropriate.
