France wants upcoming G8 summit to focus on world economy, not Iraq.

France hopes the upcoming G8 summit will focus on global economic problems and not become dominated by the war on Iraq -- which it strongly opposed -- an advisor to the French president said.

"We would not like the G8 to be focussed on Iraq, even though it will be there of course, through economic impact," Maurice Gourdault-Montagne, advisor to President Jacques Chirac, told reporters in Tokyo.

Gourdault-Montagne was in Japan to prepare for the meeting of the Group of Eight (G8) most industrialised countries due in the eastern French spa resort town of Evian from June 1 to June 3.
