Shortly before midnight on March 5th, big-rig driver Byne Delorto of Mt. Shasta, California, stopped for a snack at an auto plaza and truck stop in Lodi.
While walking back to his truck from the gas station's mini-mart, Delorto was approached by two men asking for directions. Suspicious of their intentions, he continued walking to his truck and climbed into the cab. The strangers followed. One also entered the cab, pulled a gun, and started pistol-whipping the trucker.
The would-be robber, Ira Joe Braggs, apparently did not know that Delorto was armed with a concealed .45-caliber handgun (for which he had a valid permit). The beleaguered trucker drew his gun and shot Braggs once in the chest. Braggs later died at a hospital in nearby French Camp.
Braggs' accomplice, David Adam Banks, also tried to enter the cab, but fled when he heard the gunfire. He was apprehended the next morning ...
