As an older player, I find the end of spring training is tough. Every club in the big leagues has to set its roster of 25 men. That doesn't sound like a big deal, but this is the worst time to be an older player or a fringe guy. See, there are a lot fewer superstar players than fringe players. All anybody ever hears about is the A-Rods of the world with 10 years. $252 million, but there are countless guys who are good players who, come the last few days of spring training, are on pins and needles as to whether they will or will not make the club. For the most part, the guys on this bubble are the bench guys, the long relievers, the fifth starters, guys coming back from injury or guys on minor league deals. Some of those guys won't make the team--for different reasons.
Some guys fall into the insurance plan for the big dub. This is the slot you don't want to be in. You sit in the minors and wait for someone to get hurt. When one of the big guys gets hurt, you come up from the minors and help out. You can make a decent living, but you have a hard road ahead of you to make a name for yourself.
