April was not yet over last year, and four managers already had been whacked--five, if you count the Red Sox's spring-training dismissal of Joe Kerrigan. I stared across the breakfast table at my son, Sammy, and asked, "A little soon for the curse, don't you think?"

"The Curse of Samuel Joseph" began on May 21, 1991, the day Sammy was born. Three managers were fired the first three days of his life, and Jerome Holtzman sounded an alarm for the sport, writing of my infant son's mystical powers in the Chicago Tribune.
