China, which has been strongly criticized for its handling of the SARS outbreak, stands to learn a valuable lesson from the crisis, top international health experts said in Beijing.

"I hope one lesson they learn is don't try to hide (it)," said an international disease control expert based in China who did not want to be named for fear of jeopardizing his connections with the government.

"Lies perpetuate lies. ...By lying in the beginning they minimized the attention and when they minimized the attention, they minimized the control response."
