Unless you're the M.J. of the blacktop, a well-balanced team is crucial to winning, says Scott McNeal, founder of the legendary Gus Macker Tournaments that pop up around the country as the weather gets warmer. "If you start off with the right combination, it gives you the best opportunity to win."

Many 3-on-3 basketball tourneys group teams by the average height of the four players (each team has one sub), and to avoid banging with the big boys you'll want to aim for the 6-0 bracket. But don't go for four 6-footers, McNeal cautions--it will create too many unhappy mismatches. Instead, focus on skill sets and make sure you have all the ingredients but not too much of certain elements.
