This lovely retro-pop agglomeration has continually expanded its sonic repertoire, embracing big, horn-laden, Fabulon tinged rave-ups as ably as assimilating Merseyside jingle-jangle, prime evidence their remarkable 2000 release The Discovery of a World Inside the Moone. Velocity of Sound, their fourth full-length disc, ventures bravely from the Beatlesque-by-way-of-Buddy-Holly pop that secured their reputation in favor of a denser, harder edged sound culled from the likes of Belly, Let's Active, and Sonic Youth. It works. The Apples, Rob Schneider (guitar), John Hill (guitar), Hilarie Sydney (drums), and Eric Allen (bass), all share songwriting and vocal chores with Schneider's adenoidal tenor competing with Mitch Easter's for the Least Affected by Puberty Award.
