Like all good hype, Aussies The Vines were preceded with a publicity blitz--including the cover of Rolling Stone--the likes of which hadn't been experienced since, oh, The Strokes about six months prior. Songwriter and singer Craig Nicholls could only display one finger on his hand at a time, most likely an aftereffect of a rare display of public sobriety. And since 2002 was the New Year of the Guitar Band, The Vines fit into the strategic vision. I saw `em on SNL and nearly upchucked, they were that awful. One could expect their debut disc to pander to post-Nirvana most mavens--anything that pumped, that corporately acceptable, had to be, well, lame. The surprise is that Highly Evolved has some excellent songwriting, playing, singing, and all-round performances.
"Highly Evolved" is a straight enough homage to His Martyredness, Saint Kurt, and betrays a suspicious intelligence with lines like "My time's a riddle that'll never be solved" and "My brother Bill/He work for the market/ Life is an arrow now and he is the target"--well, okay, the syntax need work.
