The Strokes, born of New York City's prep school elite, feature Nick Valensi (guitar), Julian Casablancas (vocals), Nikolai Fraiture (bass), and Fab Moretti (drums) joined by Albert Hammond, Jr. on guitar (Daddy wrote "It Never Rains in Southern California" and "To All the Girls I've Loved Before"). Having absorbed vintage NYC paradigms like Television and the Velvet Underground, their sound is similarly informed by the likes of girl punk ("Soma"), Petty and the Heartbreakers ("Last Nite"), Talking Heads ("Hard to Explain").
