J.S. Bach: Suites Nos. 5 and 6 for Solo Cello Isang Yun: Gasa; Espace I; Images Thomas Demenga, cello (ECM New Series 1782/83 461862-2)
Cellist Thomas Demenga has undertaken a recording project under the auspices of ECM's Manfred Eicher wherein the solo cello music of Bach has been presented alongside the work of modern composers. This latest installment brings together the final two Bach Suites and chamber works by Korean composer Isang Yun and contemporary Japanese composer Toshio Hosokawa, one of the late Yun's former students. Other musicians performing in these session include Asako Urushihara and Hansheinz Schneeberger on violin, Teodoro Anzelotti on accordion, Aurele Nicolet on flute, the venerable Heinz Holliger on oboe, and Thomas Larcher on piano.
Listeners who are musically faint of heart will probably already have a Bach Cello Suites recording or two in their collections; those who are more adventurous might want to give this set a listen to see what they think. For my money, the Hosokawa selection that opens this two-CD set, In die Tiefe der Zeit, for cello and accordion, is quite interesting. The Duo for Violin and Cello has it moments, and does not make me want to get up and turn it off, but after a bit of Hosokawa's third piece, Winter Bird, for solo violin, I usually find myself wanting to skip ...
