Baltimore-based guitarist Carl Filipiak has recorded some really good CDs in the past, but this is his best yet. From the opening cut, Filipiak's "One for Wes," this is a really solid effort from Filipiak on guitar, Paul Soroka on sax, Jay Dulaney on bass, and John Thomakos and Dennis Chambers on drums. The group next puts a rhythmic hitch into John Coltrane's "Giant Steps" that makes it sound fresh and new, followed by a soulful original by Soroka, "Brothers," which sounds as though it could become a classic. The group then launches into another Filipiak original, "I'm Only Dreaming," that tips its hat toward the music of Pat Metheny and Lyle ...
