Mr. Ferstler's review of the Yamaha and Sunfire units in Issue 93 was enjoyable as usual. My only disappointment was that (unless I accidentally skipped over it) there was no mention of the Sunfire's Holography processor. Although I have don't have an AVR of the caliber of the units reviewed, my experience with 2-channel sources processed through Dolby or other surround devices seems to keep leading me back to my 20-year-old Carver C-9 as producing the most enjoyable effect. The more exotic processing is spectacular when new but seems to wear with time. Of course, this is limited to when I sit in exactly the right spot, but then that's where I usually listen from anyway. (This comment does not apply to true multi-channel sources--just 2-channel.) I can't afford the Sunfire unit but I'm curious to see how the Holography sound has fared after 20 years to develop it further.
With regard to center channels, my wish list includes a feature that would sense whether the source is music or movie and automatically select one of two user set levels for each mode. Assuming Mr. Ferstler to be a person of some influence in the audio world, perhaps he would pass this suggestion on to some of the manufacturers.
