Russian President Vladimir Putin hosts the leaders of Germany and France for "peace camp" talks aiming to carve out a role in Iraq -- possibly through the United Nations -- in the face of convincing US battlefield gains.

Putin, along with French President Jacques Chirac and German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, has sought a central role for the United Nations in post-war Iraq, a position that has been treated with open skepticism in Washington.
