GEOFFREY BLAINEY is considered by many to be Australia's greatest historian. Few quarrel with the view of him as the finest literary stylist (and one of the most prolific writers) among historians.

In 1984 Blainey raised doubts, during a speech to a district Rotary conference in Warmambool, about the increasing pace of Asian immigration to Australia. This created such a furore that Blainey eventually felt obliged to resign as Professor of History at Melbourne University.
