Honda and Toyota have consistently set the standard for well-rounded, reliable family sedans with the Accord and the Camry. Along with the Volkswagen Passat, they regularly trade places as our top-rated $20,000-$30,000 sedan. This year is no different; by a small margin, the Accord regains its top rating over the redesigned Camry and Passat.
Most V6-equipped family sedans approach the price level of some large sedans, but offer better fuel economy and manueverability. Honda tweaked the Accord for 2006 and Toyota has redesigned the Camry for 2007, adding a four-cylinder Hybrid and a new V6 engine.
New sedans from Hyundai and Buick fit into the larger sedan category. The Azera is Hyundai's new flagship model, replacing the XG350. It is intended to compete with the large Toyota Avalon but is priced more like a Camry. The Buick Lucerne is the replacement for both the LeSabre and Park Avenue sedans.
This group consists of V6, 4-cylinder, and hybrid versions of the Camry and V6 versions of the Accord, Azera, and Lucerne. Pricing for the group ranged from $21,080 for the 4-cylinder Camry to $30,680 for the Lucerne.
The top-rated Accord is a refined and comfortable family sedan that offers a slightly sportier edge than its competitors. Our only complaint is somewhat pronounced road noise. All Accord V6s now feature standard stability control. All Accords have standard curtain air bags.
Despite trailing the Accord, the Camry is still a highly refined and roomy family sedan. While unexciting to drive, it has a comfortable and quiet ride. All versions offer good fuel economy, but the Camry Hybrid's impressive fuel economy is better than that of many conventional small cars. We tested three versions: Our LE four-cylinder had no major options. Our XLE V6 version includes optional stability control, heated seats, and keyless ignition system. At the time, we could only buy our Camry Hybrid with optional heated leather seats, a navigation system, and a sunroof. Stability Control is standard on the Hybrid. All Camrys have standard curtain air bags.
Hyundai's strategy of offering generous equipment at a low price makes the Azera very competitive value-wise, but its new large sedan is a strong performer as well. It is roomy, well finished, and powerful, but fuel economy is so-so. Even loaded with the Ultimate option package that includes power steering wheel and pedal adjustments and a sunroof, the Azera just tops $30,000. That includes a long list of standard safety equipment, including stability control, front and rear side air bags, and curtain air bags.
