I was on a Sunday morning a few years ago, just after Mass at St. Sebastians, our local parish, when my wife and I got the unmistakable sense that our new hometown of Santa Paula, California, is a different kind of place. Standing out on the church patio, we found ourselves charmed by a friendly couple and their cheerful, impeccably mannered children. "How many kids do you have?" I asked, making conversation.
