He has been called "beyond doubt the most accomplished and influential living sociologist of the U.S. South." Born in Manhattan, bred in East Tennessee, and for 31 years a professor at the University of North Carolina, Reed is the irreverent explainer of the South--to itself and to the rest of America. His more than a dozen books include groundbreaking sociological studies as well as the delightflul 1001 Things Everyone Should Know About the South, co-authored with his wife, Dale.
