Giving in to vigorous protests by students and faculty at Xavier University in Cincinnati, the president of this Jesuit university withdrew his cancellation of the play The Vagina Monologues, and the show went on.
The Rev. Michael J. Graham, president of the school, had cancelled its scheduled performance because of "concerns about some of the language and themes" in it. "In choosing to cancel this production," his statement read, "we believe the sensationalism surrounding the play stood in the way of our coming together to dialogue around the issue of violence against women."
About 200 faculty and students protested his cancellation, and the faculty Senate voted to send a letter asking him to reaffirm the university's commitment to academic freedom, part of the school's mission statement.
