Just when programs helping underrepresented groups in science and engineering are coming under fire as illegal, a group of ten scholars and six organizations received 2002 Presidential Awards for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring in Washington DC.
Each got a $10,000 grant for increasing participation in the sciences by women, minorities and students with disabilities in a Washington DC ceremony. Scholars were:
* Fiona M. Goodchild, education-outreach director of the Materials Research Lab at the University of California at Santa Barbara
* Martha L. Mecartney, professor of chemical engineering / materials science at the University of California at Irvine.
* Sara J. Wadis-Fascetti, associate professor of civil and environmental engineering at Northeastern University MA
* Sara L. Young, director of American Indian Research Opportunities at Montana State University at Bozeman
