One hundred years ago four people founded an organization called the National Art Collections Fund. Now known as the Art Fund, its creation came about as a reaction to the export, primarily to the United States, of major works from historic private British collections. A modest annual subscription was seen as the key to raising money, and at the first annual general meeting a membership of 300 people and [pounds sterling]700 had been accumulated.

The Art Fund's first acquisition was a watch by Daniel Quare, which was presented to the British Museum. Three years after its foundation the Art Fund launched the campaign to save the "Rokeby Venus" by Diego Velazquez for the nation. The National Gallery's annual purchase grant of [pounds sterling]5,000 was just a fraction of the [pounds sterling]45,000 required to secure the painting. The Art Fund raised the full sum by public subscription in just two months.
