Like many artists, Vincent van Gogh had a keen interest in the work of other painters. He was influenced by the work of older masters, such as Rembrandt van Rijn and Jan van Goyen, and also very much by his contemporaries, including Jean Francois Millet, Paul Signac, and Utagawa Hiroshige.
To mark the 150th anniversary of van Gogh's birth, the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam is mounting an exhibition entitled Vincent's Choice: The Musee Imaginaire of Van Gogh. Some two hundred works will show his taste in art--a subject not before studied in depth. Much of the evidence for his taste comes from his correspondence about art and literature. In his letters, which were frequently supplemented by drawings and sketches, he described in detail what he had seen and read.
