On the afternoon of August 8, 2002, Paul Redmond of Lemon Springs, North Carolina, was in his mobile home when a stranger came to the front porch and began yelling that he wanted to come inside. When Redmond refused, the man, later identified as Wesley Kelly of Texas, kept insisting. Kelly banged on the door with his fists and then broke through the door.
It appeared to Redmond that the intruder was either hallucinating or high on drugs. Kelly insisted, for instance, that there were people in the driveway trying to kill him, but when Redmond peered out the window he saw no one. Kelly asked to use the phone, but Redmond refused. The homeowner then repeatedly ordered the trespasser to leave and called 911.
