As part of his call for radically restructuring NATO, General James L. Jones wants to reduce the number of U.S. soldiers stationed in Germany and move many of them to newer bases in Eastern Europe. A former commandant of the Marine Corps and the first Marine to lead NATO (appointed in January of 2003), Jones won membership in the Council on Foreign Relations in 2000.
