According to civilian disarmament advocates, only police and military personnel can be trusted with firearms. Gun prohibition activists quickly point to gun-related tragedies involving irresponsible civilian gun owners, such as crimes, suicides, and accidents. But relatively little attention is paid to incidents of this sort involving active duty or retired law enforcement and military personnel.
On consecutive days last February, the Houston Chronicle reported gun-related mishaps, one of them utterly tragic, involving firearms and law enforcement personnel. The Chronicle for February 20th reported: "A Dallas police officer visiting a relative in northwest Houston accidentally shot himself in the leg while looking at a relative's handgun" while sitting in the relative's car. According to a witness, the Dallas patrol officer "was handling a Colt .45 caliber handgun when it discharged, striking him in the leg." Fortunately the injury was not serious.
