SEOUL, March 2 Asia Pulse - The government's push for the introduction of a labor permit system for foreign workers is causing considerable controversy among economic circles, business sources said Wednesday.
The two sides have shown huge differences over the adoption of the system.
The government, which unveiled its plan on Friday, is trying to introduce it as a replacement for the industrial trainee system, while many in economic circles are opposed, claiming there would be a series of harmful consequences.
The industrial trainee system was introduced to ease the labor shortage at small and medium-sized firms, but has been criticized for increasing the number of illegal aliens and causing human rights violations.
According to the government, under the soon-to-be-introduced system, it will directly control the issuance of permits, distribution and management of foreign workers along with other governments. This, the administration said, would help prevent irregularities such as the increased number of illegal aliens under the industrial trainee system.
It also expected the system to reverse the tarnishing of the national image from abuses of migrant trainees, such as failure to pay wages.
However, business organizations have voiced objections to the government move.
