CANBERRA, April 1 Asia Pulse - Australian Treasurer Peter Costello has today admitted the war commitment would be very expensive and is making budget estimates difficult.

Mr Costello said formulating this year's Budget was hard, given Australia's participation in the war against Iraq.

"The Australian troops, the men and women who are in the services, are our first priority," he said.

"Funding those obligations will be very expensive, very expensive indeed.

"It's difficult to actually make assumptions about the duration of the war at the moment, so that does add an element of uncertainty."

On the weekend, Mr Costello refused to rule out the Budget slipping into deficit as a result of the war.
