TAIPEI, April 1 Asia Pulse - The opposition Taiwan Solidarity Union (TSU) has called for restrictions on travel between mainland China and Taiwan to contain the spread of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and to protest Beijing's meddling with Taiwan's bids for access to the World Health Organization (WHO).

TSU Secretary-General Lin Chih-chia said the party's Central Executive Committee decided to call for a halt of direct shipping links between the mainland and the two frontline islands of Kinmen and Matsu, and a suspension of visits to Taiwan by mainland groups, because of the SARS outbreak on the mainland.

By the same token, Taiwan public officials should be banned from visiting the mainland while the disease is still raging, said the party.
